CO Emissions from Power Plants
 Efficiently Scrubbed Away

BASF AG (Ludwigshafen, Germany) has developed an amine-based solvent for removing carbon dioxide (CO) from power plant emissions. These solvents are expected to be more stable than conventional products, which are easily degenerated by the oxygen contained in the power-plant waste gas.
The company already markets an amine scrubbing technology for the removal of acid gases under the brand name aMDEA. But acid gases generated by incineration occur at far lower pressure than those from chemical processes and also contain oxygen. Thus , alternatives to aMDEA ar a crucial need for power-plant emissions, which can substantially reduce the cost of CO removal.

Expansion plan of Pak steel completed by June 2005:

The expansion plan of Pakistan steel up to 1.5 million tones would be completed by June 2005. A delegation headed by Nikolay V. Ullyanov, President of M/s Tyazpromexport  of Russian Federation stated this while briefing to the Liaquat.

Cement industry to shift to coal:

The entire cement industry in Pakistan has been asked by the government to switch over to the use of indigenous coal from furnace oil that would save 50- percent foreign exchange being spent on the import of coal. According to official sources, the industry is now in the process of switching over. It would generate demand for about 2.5 million tones per annum by 2005. At present, almost all the energy consumed by the coal cement industry is being generated by a mix of imported and indigenous coal. The sources said 175. billion tones coalfield. Therefore, the government has decided to enhance the share of coal in the overall energy mix from five to 20 percent by the end of the decade.
